My interest in Fallout began when my grandparents bought me a second-hand Xbox 360 for quite a cheap price. It came with a few games, but the two that caught my eye were Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. I started with absolutely no idea what the games were about, but slowly I became more and more engrossed in the story and atmosphere. I mostly played New Vegas for the sole reason that it had a better tutorial. I eventually grew more and more accustomed to it.
The story behind Fallout can get long and complicated, so I'll only focus on what makes it great to me. The story starts with a second Cold War in 2077. The world looks much like the 50s, but with far more technological advancements. Robots, power armor, laser/plasma weapons, you name it. At the peak of this new Cold War, the world is ravaged by nuclear bombs, forcing those who are fortunate enough into Vaults. The Vaults were believed to help people, but they were more of social experiments. After a while, the inhabitants of these Vaults entered the now wasteland. Societies and cults are formed, all having a different take on the wasteland.
Raiders: Savage groups of drug-addicts. Their weapons are typically bullet-firing weapons with their armor consisting of anything they can find.
Gunners: Mercenaries, pretty much the same as Raiders.
Feral Ghouls: Not everyone made it into a vault. Those who survived the nuclear explosions are left with rough and destroyed skin. Some Ghouls live like regular people, besides the fact they live for a very long time. Not all Ghouls are able to maintain sanity. Some become Feral. They wander like zombies, killing all in sight.
Settlers: Your typical people. Usually city-dwellers or farmers. Mostly kind people, but some test how much they can do without getting killed for it.
There are plenty more I could cover, such as mutated animals, different gangs and groups, but that would take a lot of time. The atmosphere of Fallout makes the game for me. The dilapidated buildings, the groups of people creating things to live the best they can, the once-beautiful scenery now reduced to waste. Some details I like are the music from the 40's and 50's, the dog you can get to assist you named Dogmeat, and the sheer rustic look of everything. Overall, a great series.
