The Harlem Hellfighters

Becoming an Author

For my American literature class, I have to write a short-story. I've decided to write based on the Harlem Hellfighters. They were officially known as the 369th infantry in WWI. An entire infantry of African-Americans. Americans at the time showed hatred toward them, to the point of giving them to France because they refused to fight alongside blacks. In France, they were treated like any other regiment, also keeping their uniforms besides their new French helmets.

The Hellfighters were one of the most impressive people on the battlefield. Pvt. Needham Roberts heard a German patrol entering his designated area by cutting barbed wire. He accidentally loaded a French magazine into his American gun, jamming it. He then fought off the patrol using the rifle as a club and a bolo knife, killing at least four and wounding about 20 more. Roberts was the first American awarded the Croix de Guerre. He wasn't given the Medal of Honor until 2015, due to the heavy racism of the time period.

This is just one of many. These men fought for a country who only showed them hate. Some came home to nothing and died penniless. I find these men to be really awesome.

  1. "These men fought for a country who only showed them hate." That is such a powerful statement. They fought so hard even though they did not receive the honor they deserved for their fearless acts. Wow!

  3. I now realize I forgot to include the second man awarded the Croix de Guerre, Private Henry Johnson. It is believed he assisted in the defense against the German patrol. Both men were very wounded, but together managed to win a fight of two men against thirty.

Possible Mission Trip?

Putting It to Good Use    My parents and I have been talking and we are trying to find a way for me to make a trip to Belarus in June. We aren't 100% on it happening, but it would be a great experience if it happened. I would be going to an English camp with people my age and "attempting" to talk to them. Another thing we are looking into is finding a way to get our friend Sergey from Belarus to here for a week or so. It would be pretty cool to have someone from another country stay at your house for that long, and to meet someone who you have only seen online. He also says he was the best player on his high school basketball team, so I'm sure he'd enjoy the basketball goal in our backyard.     Updates on my life would include my girlfriend breaking up with me, which really sucked. I'm only 17 though, and it being my first relationship I can't expect too much. Life goes on or whatever they say. I'm looking forward to co-op starting back, e

Getting an Early Start on Blogging Homework

Здравствуйте!    That's "Hello" in Russian. I'm currently trying to get a head start on my Blogging homework while waiting on my Russian teacher on Skype, Sergey, or Сергей, if you prefer. I'm sure the latter is less to your taste. He is a very smart man who lives in Belarus, working with my church as our translator. I'm also trying to think of comments for my fellow student's blogs. I'm not very good at commenting on other people's material. So I'm typing this while I think.     I say I am getting a "Head Start" but I'm sure I'll put this post off until later in the week, guaranteed. I don't have much else to say, really. Things are going as they normally do, I guess. I ate some Goldfish crackers a few minutes ago, if that counts for anything. Now I should probably go comment on some blogs.  до свидания. (Bye.)

Going Back on Your Word

Why?    I don't know why, but I feel like blogging some more this week even though I don't have a topic. When in doubt, I usually just talk about whats been going on lately and run with it. So... I'm gonna do that.     Right now my little sister is learning about the American Revolution, but it's pretty annoying listening to "Yankee Doodle" on repeat like she is. She does school in the dining room, so I'm lucky enough to be able to hear the radio. By the end of it, I should be able to recite it by heart.    With recent events... I went to the Renaissance Festival with my girlfriend, which was pretty fun. If you aren't sure what that is, you can find out here . Considering both of us like fantasy like Skyrim and others, it was cool to see people creating weapons and clothing in a period-accurate way.    This paragraph is being written a day after the previous ones. I'm exhausted, and I don't know why. I'm drinking coffee to
